The Unsolved Murder of Alan Wood

On Saturday, 24th October 2009, 50-year-old Alan Wood was found murdered in his home in Lound, Lincolnshire. No one has ever been charged with his murder.

Alan was last seen alive on Wednesday, 21st October 2009, spotted on CCTV shopping at a Morrison’s supermarket. From there, he went to his local pub, The Willoughby Arms and left around 6:30 pm to go home.

Alan owned a small gardening business and also worked in Sainsbury’s. On Saturday, 24th October, a friend and colleague of Alan’s went to his home to check on him as he had not shown up for work. They found Alan in the living room of his home. His hands had been bound with tape, and he had been repeatedly stabbed in the head before having his throat cut. There was also a deep wound to the back of his neck, indicating an attempted decapitation.

Although police do not know how many people carried out the attack, one offender cut themselves, leaving blood at the scene. Forensic Analysis determined it belongs to a male. DNA database searches have been carried out in the UK and across the world, but so far, no matches have been found.

Investigators also found footprints at the scene that can be matched to Converse trainers.

The police believe the unprovoked attack was financially motivated as Alan’s bank cards were taken from the scene. These bank cards were used at ATMs in Bourne and Stamford a few days after the murder. CCTV shows a man between 5ft 9in – 5ft 11in, dressed in smart-casual clothing with a striped scarf, using Alan’s bank cards. The man also has a limp due to his right leg being longer than his left leg.

A reward of £40,000 was offered by Sainsbury’s, but no one has come forward with the information needed to solve the case. The police believe the person/persons who committed the crime may have been visiting or working in the country at the time of the murder but have since left.

It is possible the killer/killers thought Alan had more money than he actually did, as it was such a brutal attack for a minimal amount of money, but with no clear suspects, the motive may never be known.

Police are still investigating the case, intent on finding Alan Wood’s killer, and anyone with information is urged to contact Lincolnshire police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
